Smash vs SendGB: How Do They Compare?

Smash vs SendGB: How Do They Compare?

File transfer services all claim to be the best option for transferring large files online – but which one is really best?

In this article we compare two file transfer services – Smash and SendGB – to determine what they really offer, how they stack up, and what functionalities set them apart from each other/ What are the limits, what are the constraints, and what are the ways that each service differentiates itself to carve out a niche in the market – in this article we’ll cover all that and more.

We’ve already looked at how competitors to Smash like WeTransfer, Dropbox, Transfernow, TransferXL, Swiss Transfer, and Filemail compare, and there’s generally been a clear winner – will SendGB stand up to the challenge, too. Read on to learn where Smash and SendGB stand!

How to Compare Two File Transfer Services

We’ll compare Smash and SendGB across the following components:

  • Their Free Tier offer

  • Their Paid Tier offers

  • Their speed, security and personalization options

  • Their Outlook plugin, user management and API functionality

Smash and SendGB both target free and premium users and this article will consider the functionality at both tiers. Whether small business use cases or sharing files and photos amongst family and friends, we’ll consider how each of the services fits the needs of demanding customers.

Both Smash and SendGB have a free tier but there are some significant differences between what they offer and how they work.

Smash offers free transfers of files of any size – yes, unlimited file size, no limits – while SendGB puts a hard limit of 5GB on any transfer. Interestingly, while Smash keeps all files available for up to 7 days after upload, SendGB offers 7 day file availability for files over 250MB. For smaller files or folders, SendGB allows users to adjust the file availability up to 90 days, though free users seeking a means to transfer large files may not have cause to use that longer window.

Smash and SendGB both allow for sharing by email and by URL, and both allow users to add password protection to their transfer for additional piece of mind. All up, the biggest difference between the two free tier services is the file size limit that SendGB puts on every free transfer.

One other difference to keep in mind is the UI.

Smash’s paid tier is targeted at power users that regularly transfer large files and demand additional functionality. The size of the transfers remains unlimited but, on top of this, Smash offers terabytes of storage for Pro, Team, and Enterprise users, and extended availability for the files. Pricing starts at less than five euros a month for the Pro plan and teams can step up and have multiple user accounts for just 12 euros a month.

SendGB adopts a different pricing plan with larger transfers billed on a per-transfer basis. For example, if a user wants to share a 50GB file, they will pay 2.99 euros for the transfer which is then available online for 7 days. SendGB offers transfers of up to 1TB for 9.99 euros, though with no storage and no team or premium plan. Users simply pay as they go for sending files to others and no account creation is required (save for sharing an email address to potentially access files after the transfer).

Smash vs SendGB: Functionality

As well as the top level, big picture view of the two services and their free and paid tiers, we can also take a deeper dive into the different functionalities that SendGB and Smash offer, or don’t offer.

Smash offers an Outlook Plugin for paid users to transfer files directly from Microsoft’s market leading business email client. The Outlook Plugin means that users don’t have to leave their email client to send large files or to share a file that is too big to send as an email attachment.

SendGB does not offer a plugin for Microsoft or any other email client.

Easy. Secure. Responsible.

Smash and SendGB are both fast with servers located on continents around the world to speed up sharing of large files. Essentially, once a file is uploaded to either service, it is available to download immediately. This means that the sole constraint for upload or download speed on Smash or SendGB is the quality of the users own data connection.

Whether using the free tier or one of the premium options, Smash allows all users to customize their sharing URL. This means that instead of sending a URL to a recipient that is a mixture of alphanumeric characters, you can instead send a descriptive URL such as FamilyPhotosPPT or FinalScriptDocument. This inspires confidence in people receiving the link and ensures that they have an idea of what they will be downloading to their device. Additionally, all the paid plans at Smash offer options to customize logos, backgrounds, and promotional messages.

There are no personalization options offered by SendGB.

Smash offers granular user management options for Team and Enterprise accounts. There are three roles available for account managers to assign:

  • Collaborator: can send files and access their own transfer history

  • Marketer: can send files and access their own transfer history, plus manage the account design customization and control settings for ‘promotional pop-ins’ for communication purposes

  • Analyst: can send files and access the history of ALL users on the Team or Enterprise account

SendGB is aimed at individual users that do not need to create accounts to send files. As a result, there are no user management options with SendGB.

Both file transfer services take security seriously.

Smash and SendGB both encrypt files end-to-end to ensure maximum security for users and their data. The two options use AES 256 encryption and adopt SSL/TLS protocols to give confidence to users that their files are safe and will not be intercepted by a ‘man in the middle’ bad actor.

Smash has an API for developers that allows developers to integrate its file transfer service into organizational workflows. In only a few lines of code and a couple of minutes it’s possible to deploy Smash enterprise-wide and manage all sharing and billing from a single endpoint.

SendGB does not offer an API.

When it comes to the speed and security of the transfer, Smash and SendGB hold their own with market leading encryption and lightning-fast speed. However, when it comes to the additional functionality the small businesses, enterprise, and consumers demand, Smash is well out in front.

Smash offers free transfers without any constraints on the size of the file and premium tiers are priced on a monthly basis rather than a per-transfer basis with SendGB. The Outlook Plugin is a big plus and the API for business users proves popular for those who regularly transfer large files; SendGB offers neither functionality. Large files that are transferred via Smash are available for up to 30 days on Smash while even the most expensive SendGB plans limit large file transfers to just 7 days of availability. User Management and Personalization options remain missing from SendGB, too, while at Smash they are standard for Team plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Premium tiers on Smash require a flat monthly or annual fee. This means you can send as many files as you like for one low price. SendGB, on the other hand, charges a per-transfer fee for sharing files that are larger than 5GB. For users that regularly send large files or folders, Smash’s flat rate plan is probably better, while a one-off transfer of a file smaller than 50GB might be cheaper on SendGB. However, anything larger than that and even Smash’s monthly fee puts you ahead!

  • Yes! Other file transfer services put hard limits on the size of the file that can be transferred on a free tier but, at Smash, there are no limits. You can try Smash for free today and send a file of 1TB (or even bigger!) with password protection, customized URL, download notifications, and speedy service all thrown in!

  • No! With Smash you can send any type of file – if you can upload it, you can send it. Everyday users send photos, documents, movies, audio files and more to business partners, clients and customers, family, friends, and colleagues. It’s always fast, always secure, and just so easy!
